Tasting & Food Notes
Attractive medium ruby core. Medium plus intensity with dried cherry, cranberry, currant, plum and warm baking spice. Tea leaves, damp earth and cherry pit round out this complex youthful nose. Dry with medium body and medium plus acidity. High toned red fruits are surrounded by youthful fruit tannin and the medium finish brings flavours of cacao powder and stone fruit. This wine will certainly benefit from 12 to 18 months ageing before it has mellowed enough to show it’s best. When ready, serve cool at 18oC in fine Burgundy stemware alongside all manner of poultry, semi-soft alpine cheeses and flavourful beef or veal dishes.
The fruit for this wine was sourced primarily from our own old estate vines as well as select barrels from our younger vines and purchased fruit from select growers. All fruit was hand-picked between mid-October and mid November and each batch was handled separately. After picking into small bins the grapes were transported to the winery where further manual sorting took place. After de-stemming and crushing, the grapes and must were moved into open-top stainless steel tanks where fermentation took place at an average of 24oC. This‘cooler than normal’temperature allowed Jean Pierre to preserve the vibrant fruit character of the Pinot fruit without sacrificing colour or structure. Punching down was utilized during primary fermentation and post fermentation maceration on the skins lasted for 20 days. 80% of the wine, along with the fine lees, was moved to 10% new and 90% seasoned French oak barrels where malo ensued. The remaining 20% remained in tank. The wines were aged for 12 months in wood and after final blending were fined and lightly filtered before bottling in August 2013.
The Story of Essence
When winemaker Jean Pierre Colas joined the team at 13th Street Winery in August of 2009, we knew we had a world class winemaker capable of great things. He’d already made the Wine Spectator White Wine of the Year while in Chablis and was determined to accomplish the same again in Niagara. With his vast experience and success in many parts of the world, not the least of which was 10 excellent years working at Peninsula Ridge in Niagara, during which he was named Winemaker of the Year, we knew the possibilities were limitless. Part of the plan was to introduce a ‘signature series’ of wines that would capture the heart and soul of the vineyards and vintage from which they came. These wines would clearly express the winemaking philosophy that Jean Pierre espouses - one of minimalist intervention, natural and patient winemaking with wines crafted based on aroma, taste and texture not numbers from a lab report. These wines would be made from only those varieties that showed exceptional potential in the vineyard and cellar and only in those vintages that permitted such excellence. The grapes may come from our own estate vineyards, or they may be purchased from other exceptional growers in Niagara - as long as they represented the best fully ripe fruit in Niagara with complex and intense flavours and classic structure. Simply put, these wines would be the Essence of Niagara, the Essence of Jean Pierre Colas and the Essence of 13th Street Winery’s commitment to producing the very best wines in the region. With the special 2009 vintage, Essence was born.
